JavaScript Gets Speed Boost With OS 2.0

The iPhone OS 2 renders JavaScript twice as fast in MobileSafari, according to benchmark tests reported by iPhone Atlas. The majority of web apps and microsites make heavy use of JavaScript, and, until recently, developers may have needed to use every trick in their arsenal to get their web based content behaving normally. While the result has generally been acceptable for website content from a usability standpoint, performance of games and other processor intensive applications was less than perfect - until now.

The increased download speeds of 3g combined with the bump in JavaScript performance will afford developers the opportunity to create more robust web based solutions, and provide users an experience which more closely resembles the native iPhone application experience.

The iPhone OS 1.x reportedly generated test times in excess of 9000 ms. The latest build of iPhone OS 2.0, thought to be near-final, takes less than half the time at just under 4500 ms, according to iPhone Atlas’ article.

iPhone OS 2.0 runs on an updated version of WebKit, numbered 525.18, to render pages in MobileSafari.
