Google recently announced a version of Google Talk formatted specifically to run in MobileSafari on the iPhone and iPod touch. Unfortunately, it appears to suffer from some major usability issues such as lack of preferences or background support, with users status being set to “unavailable” upon receiving a phone call or accessing another iPhone application.

With the current text messaging rates reaching ridiculous rates of over $1,300/MB, alternatives are certainly welcome, unfortunately it seems Google Talk is not quite ready for prime time. Both infoweek and Gizmodo have more coverage of this topic.
