1 Million iPhones Sold in 3 Days
The iPhone 3G Debuted this weekend in over 20 countries and after 3 days Apple is reporting sales totaling over 1 Million units. “IPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Chief Executive Steve Jobs Monday. “It took 74 days to sell the first 1.0 million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”
There’s no doubt the cost reduction helped drive sales; the iPhone 3G is 60% cheaper than the original’s $499 price-tag and contains a host of new features like web-browsing speeds up to twice as fast, GPS capabilities and improved application capabilities. The iPhone sold out in Japan on the first day, and getting one in another country wasn’t much easier.
Another major appeal to customers was the launch of Apple’s App Store, allowing 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone legitimately for the first time in history. Apple’s indicated over 10 Million apps have been sold since the launch of the App Store.
Apple (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people) shares gained $1.30, or 0.8%, closing Monday’s session at $173.88.
