GreasePocket-GreaseMonkey for iPhone

GreaseMonkey is a Firefox extension permitting the installation of scripts that allow users to make on-the-fly changes to many HTML-based web pages. GreasePocket exists as an iPhone port that enables users to modify the presentation of web content in MobileSafari, embedding content areas or UI elements that provide enhanced functionality.

GreasePocket was created over 3 days at iPhoneDevCamp. During the hackathon it made its debut and won “Best Web App”, with a demonstration showing how to add a button to mobile Gmail, allowing the user to insert their signature in an email message. Though not yet publicly released, the authors do plan to open source the project.

Brady Forrest recently wrote “The iPhone knows my location, but it doesn’t let me share it with websites via the built-in browser. For an application developer to auto-magically provide me location-aware benefits they need to write a client app. Just like Greasemonkey userscripts can be installed via the web. These scripts can access the accelerometer and location APIs (perhaps more). GreasePocket has the potential to shift some of the balance back to the web.”

Ishan Anand and Ajay Kapur developed GreasePocket at iPhoneDevCamp. The demo was impressive, check it out at greasepocket.wordpress.com and let us know what you think.
